The role of motifs in Iranian handmade carpets

The design refers to the overall combination of decorative elements in the carpet; The simplest elements in the design of the carpet are called motifs
Which is often combined in more complex units; These units, in turn, are possible Arrange in a different composition or sequence to form a pattern.

The terms in the design and layout of the carpet are the same as those used for weaving And they are quite controversial, and collections of a few terms are currently in use. In formal and academic studies, carpets are basically classified based on their role and classification. Letters, usually taken from the vast treasures of Islamic art.

The motifs that follow are common in the text and margins of Iranian carpets:

  1. Toranj: It is a decorative motif that is usually in the form of a revolving line (curved line) and is mostly seen as a central motif in the design text. The most common species are the circle, oval, shield-like, and rhombus-shaped. Their edges are usually in the form of stigmas or stair treads.
  2. Inscription: An elongated oval shape. When used in the design of a rug, it may be repeated only in the form of a regular inscription, or it may reflect two different shapes, one in the middle of the rim. Usually, inscriptions are brought inside the inscription.
  3. Eslimi (Eslimi branch): It is a herbaceous plant with open (acetate-abstract) double-leafed leaves (Eslimi dragon mouth). In marginal maps, Eslimi can appear as a series of twists, interconnected pairs, one inverted pair.
  4. Boteh: It looks like a leaf with a curved tip, known in the West as a “pear” and a “teardrop,” and resembles a pine motif like a Kashmir scarf.
  5. Eslimi Flower: The role of the wind-shaped windbreak is somewhat similar to that of the lotus flower (in Iran it is also called pomegranate flower and other letters). The most common type is the marginal Eslimi flower, which alternates inward and outward and is repeated on both sides of the stem of the Eslimi flower.
  6. Rose: which looks like a completely open rose that can be seen from above.
  7. Das leaves: It is like tall, curved leaves with serrated (wavy) edges.
  8. A piece of cloud (known in Iran as Eslimi Mari): A piece of cloth that has been torn apart and apparently taken from Chinese art.
