Rapid wound healing of diabetic patients with Shirazi chamomile
Every year, a large number of patients with diabetes undergo open heart surgery for coronary arteries due to cardiovascular disease. But one of the most important problems for these patients is the healing of wounds after surgery. To solve this problem, Iranian researchers have used the medicinal plant Shirazi chamomile and have achieved excellent results.
Diabetes is the most common chronic metabolic disorder associated with hyperglycemia in humans, which can be caused by a lack of insulin (type 1 diabetes) or peripheral tissue resistance to insulin with decreased insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells (type 2 diabetes). It has been very high and is still increasing.
Approximately 150 million people worldwide have the chronic disease, and that number is expected to double in the next 20 years.
In Iran, according to statistics, there are currently more than three million people with diabetes, which according to the World Health Organization, if no effective action is taken, this number will reach about seven million by 2030.
According to experts, diabetes has many side effects such as delayed wound healing, cardiovascular disease, ocular and renal complications, atherosclerosis, neuropathy and retinopathy.
Symptoms of the disease include shortness of breath, overeating, urinary incontinence, blurred vision, headache, drowsiness, and tiredness, to which should be added, in particular, the prolongation of wound healing time.
This problem is especially troubling, given that about 15% of people with diabetes develop ulcers on their lower limbs, such as their legs.
This problem is exacerbated when these patients undergo coronary artery bypass graft surgery due to their high risk of cardiovascular disease.
To treat this complication, various chemical and herbal medicines have been offered so far. But each has its limitations. Therefore, our country’s scientists have tried in a research study to find a new way to overcome this problem.
For this purpose, researchers from Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Jihad University Medicinal Plants Research Institute and Tarbiat Modares University have tested the effect of Shirazi chamomile ointment in this regard.
In this study, which was performed with the participation of 60 diabetic patients who had referred to Imam Ali Hospital in Kermanshah for coronary artery surgery, the researchers applied ointment to the wound area of a group of these patients after washing with betadine from the second day after surgery. Shirazi chamomile was soaked and dressed. Then, the healing rate of the wounds was measured on the 4th, 7th and 14th days after surgery with the relevant scientific scales and compared with those for whom this ointment was not used.
Interesting results of these studies showed that Shirazi chamomile ointment can accelerate the healing of coronary artery bypass surgery wounds in diabetic patients after at least one week of use.
Soraya Nejati, a researcher in the Department of Internal Surgery, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, and her colleagues in this study say: After using Shirazi chamomile ointment on the wounds of patients, in fact, 7 and 14 days after such application, the patients’ wound healing score It was observed to show the effectiveness of this treatment.
Therefore, based on these findings, the ointment prepared from the medicinal plant of Shirazi chamomile after at least one week of use, can accelerate the healing of coronary artery bypass surgery wounds and other wounds in diabetic patients and significantly help in faster recovery of these patients.
