The fact that weavers use natural and plant dyes for the weaving of their gabbehs and also have traditional dyeing makes their gabbehs gain a special prestige.
There is another type of Gabbeh that is self-dyed. They are in such a way that no dye is used for their texture.
Its wool is so-called self-colored, meaning it is picked directly from the trap, in other words, it is hand-picked. This type of Gabbeh is woven in natural colors of fleece (white, black, gray and beige).
For this reason, it is more resistant to washing and sunlight. It can even be said that its color resistance is more than carpet because the ingredients of the colors are completely natural.
The tools and equipment that Gabbeh needs are: The most important and main tool that he has. Gabbeh tree in different sizes that are placed horizontally and on the ground. It is often made of wood or metal and includes combs, knives and scissors. Most nomadic weavers weave on the ground and on horizontal poles without a plan, and to start the work, they usually use another rug called (recipe), and during weaving, they choose colors and color composition. And this causes a different Gabbeh to be created from the previous example.
For Gabbeh yarn, cotton yarn or cotton yarn mixed with goat hair is used, and for its weft, fleece is used. The best wool for weaving different types of carpets and Gabbeh is Persian wool. The number of weft yarns used in each ridge of Gabbeh, which has a large structure, varies from three to eight, and in smaller types, up to fourteen wefts.
Gabbeh is woven in different sizes. It is usually woven in sizes of 120 to 100 in width and 250 to 200 cm in length. Gabbeh is usually coarse-textured and Gabbeh fabric is at least one centimeter high. Of course, in custom types this size may change.
The artist who created Gabbeh, with faces arising from narratives and stories and natural themes and expressing mental states, actually brings the world to the forefront in the role of Gabbeh through his own eyes. Gabbeh’s designs and motifs originate from simple and fluent thoughts, and spontaneous motifs are formed on the field of weaving with simplicity and clear and transparent expression.
Gabbeh’s role is the story of the weaver, the story of the herd and the shepherd, and the snow and the storm and the fire and the water and the sun and the migration, the love and the affection and the horse that goes to the black tent of love. Gabbeh’s face is irregular and shows the peak and low mood of the weaver. Gabbeh’s role is an avoidance of repetition and is innovative and, unlike the designs of urban designers, which are full of ambiguity and conservatism, it is directly inspired by nature. Gabbeh’s role and its characteristics have been determined and are determined only by Illyrian and nomadic life, and this is Gabbeh’s originality.
Gabbeh design, patterning and even painting are separate from carpets and rugs and are subject to certain rules and traditions. Gabbeh weavers are even more open-handed than carpet weavers due to their freedom from restraint. Gabbeh’s designs and patterns are all subjective and include most geometric designs. In one or two margins of these rugs, a simple and geometric shape is repeated in a single way. Simplifying the lines and giving geometric shapes to the lines is one of the important features of Gabbeh weaving in Iran, which is done in a new shape over time.
In its simple background, a large bergamot or several small rhombuses are seen on longitudinal stretches, and sometimes in the empty text in the middle of Gabbeh, the role of a tree or the role of four seasons or the role of a lion is woven. These roles and faces with different colors on the nomadic Gabbehs give a special effect to Gabbeh. Gabbeh weavers freely express their feelings and imaginations in these roles.
