Birjand handmade carpet of Iran
Birjand is the capital of South Khorasan province, which is located at a distance of 1309 km from Tehran and at an altitude of 1465 meters above sea level.
The city is bounded on the north by Torbat Heydariyeh and Gonabad, on the east by the Iranian-Afghan border, on the southeast and south by Zabol, and on the west by Tabas and Ferdows. The city is surrounded by desert and the climate of the southern region is warm and the mountainous region is temperate. It is 59 degrees, 13 minutes long, 32 degrees and 53 minutes latitude.
Birjand is one of the important and ancient centers of carpet weaving and today its carpet is known in the world as Mod. The art and industry of carpet weaving is common in this city, especially in the fashionable and bright region, and the people of this region look at carpet weaving as their ancestral art-industry and are very interested in it.
Features of Birjand carpet
The design, pattern, color, and layout of the carpets in these areas are designed by local designers in their own style. Herati (Mahi), Khorasani, the designs of Shargh Company (Mod), and the famous role of Saadi Rabee Derakhshi are among the pervasive motifs in this region. Explain that some carpet weavers choose the color of the carpet mentally and do it from a black pen design. The colors used in these rugs are light and often cream, lacquer garlic, elephant, pea, and crimson.
Texture: Birjand carpets are woven with very soft and delicate wool. The lint of the carpets is made of wool and their weft is made of cotton thread. The number of these carpets is high, between 30 and 40 and a maximum of 45 rows. The knot of the carpets is asymmetrical and its weaving is Persian. These carpets are double-breasted and slightly loose.
Raw materials: Part of the wool used in these carpets is provided by local sheep and the other part of Mashhad market. In the texture of these carpets, a semi-circular stand of Mashhad is used.
Important carpet weaving centers: Among the important carpet weaving centers in Birjand, after fashion and brilliance, we can mention Noghand, Asyaban, Baghistan, and Dastgerd. Carpet weaving is also practiced professionally in the four parts of Birjand, namely the central parts, Darmian, Sarbisheh, and Khosf.
Size: In Birjand, small fabric carpets are woven in different sizes. Of course, in the past, large cloth carpets were woven with plant motifs in the Mod region, some of which are located in the holy shrine of Imam Ali (as) in Najaf.
