Carpet weaving in Sabzevar has an ancient history. According to experts, about a century has passed since carpet weaving in this city. Some sources have mentioned this history until the eighth century and the Timurid period.
According to the statistics available in 1340, about fifty carpets existed only in the city of Sabzevar and its suburbs and were produced. In 1344, the number of carpets in Sabzevar and Esfarayen reached 110, in which 367 workers were engaged in weaving. In 1975, there were 870 machines in Sabzevar, of which 3170 workers used to weave carpets.
This profession has increased significantly in 1977 and has increased especially in the villages. In this year, there have been few major and collective workshops in Sabzevar itself, and each work has not exceeded 4 to 5 machines, while in Outside the city, in villages such as Mazinan-Awad-Voghraqoli, mass-produced and mainly weaving workshops have been producing carpets.

Sabzevar carpet from the past to the present:
During the reign of the Safavid sultans over Iran, the city of Sabzevar was one of the major centers of carpet trade with the regions located in eastern Iran, and the commercial shipments of carpets through this city were sent to India and 9.
In terms of carpet weaving and its contemporary history in Sabzevar, without a doubt, the years after 1300 AH should be considered another starting point for that region. Unlike other areas of the province, carpet weaving began in the city of Sabzevar itself and after 1325 AH, it penetrated into the villages around it. Some also mention the last two decades of the 13th century AH (1380-1280 AH) for this date. According to research, carpet weaving was first started by two brothers from Azerbaijan and narrated by several Azerbaijani employers in Sabzevar. In general, a history of about 80 units, most of which is 100 years old, can be considered for today’s Sabzevar carpet. Carpet weaving in Sabzevar started from caravanserais. With the arrival of the Azerbaijanis, the Turkish fabric entered the city, and more or less Persian weaving became popular. Azerbaijanis who came to the region infiltrated the city due to high unemployment. Carpet weaving was abused at the time, and the male weaver was paid very little, and most children aged 7 and over were used. At that time, because unemployment was higher among men, men were more likely to weave. 7-year-old boys were also used to weave delicate rugs, and the government did nothing to prevent this. This method lasted until 1340 AH. The government did not allow this to happen after that. That’s why parents used to get their children’s birth certificates 3 to 4 years older, and children used to weave carpets with that small size and delicate hands, and gradually women came to work.
Due to a number of prejudices, women weaved carpets at home. At present, women’s carpet weaving is in full swing, because it is not economically viable for men at all, and they cannot afford to support their families. It goes without saying, however, that men’s preoccupation with carpet weaving in the past caused them to weave strong, good, durable, beautiful, and carefully woven rugs.
One of the most important features of carpet weaving in Sabzevar, as mentioned, is that carpet weaving first began in Sabzevar and after about 25 years it penetrated the villages and suburbs of the city, and was first popularized by Sheikh Cheshmi carpet weaving in Cheshmeh village. The design and layout of the carpets in the textures of the villages was urban. The most important villages active in Sabzevar carpet are:
Mij, Al-Balagh, Hosseinabad, Mehri Shani, Hesar Sorkh, Chah Sokhteh, Hosseinabad, Sangard, Shamkan, Deh Hosseini and Afchang. Currently, your production in villages such as Hesar Sorkh, Mij and Al-Balagh, which supply a group of the best carpets in Sabzevar, has been declining for nearly seven years. Carpet weaving in Sabzevar city has gradually disappeared and has become very pale. Due to the lack of facilities, the weaver has to occupy a room in his residence to weave his carpet. He has to use a lot of energy until this carpet is woven, and he gets paid very little for it. As a result, the weaver tries to finish the rug as soon as possible in order to get paid. Currently, in Sabzevar city, a large number of good producers have left their weavers and materials with several weavers and have gone to other parts of the country.
In the old carpets, the background of the carpet was mostly woven with cream, and since then they have woven lacquer and a small amount of silk. In the past, woodpeckers were made of wood, but for almost 40 years, woodpeckers have also been made of metal. Most of Triz’s maps are woven in Sabzevar, which is infinitely different from Tabriz in terms of price, due to the low quality of raw materials. And texture. According to many manufacturers, the carpet market in Iran and even Sabzevar has been ruined by Chinese and Indian textile carpets.
The value of Sabzevar carpet is very different from its old carpet and it is very low in terms of value.
